Of major importance to a student’s success is organization, work habits and study skills. In September, each student from Kindergarten through Grade Eight receives an Agenda (student planner) for recording assignments, commitments and goals.

The Agenda is also a valuable tool for parents as it offers a way for parents and teachers to communicate. Parents are asked to look at their child’s Agenda daily in order to stay on top of what their child is doing and to read teacher notes when recorded. In addition, parents may wish to send notes to the teacher via the Agenda.

The staff at Woking School feels that this agenda is a valuable tool to help students remain organized. For it to be most effective, we need not only the teachers to check it on a daily basis, but we need parents to do the same. The agenda program has proved to be an effective way to help students raise their grade averages. Organized, better prepared students achieve!

Homework Policy

Parents can support a child’s interest in lifelong learning by encouraging good study habits and providing a learning environment in the home.
• Provide a quiet, well-lighted place for students to do homework.
• Help your child budget time so a regular schedule is set.
• Take an active interest in what your child is doing in school. Ask for an explanation of particular assignments and what is being learned.

Because education is a lifelong process that extends beyond the school, it is important that students recognize that learning occurs in the home and community. Based on the practice of good learning theory, the Board affirms and supports the assigning of homework at all grade levels. It is understood that an awareness of a student’s ability, grade level and home conditions will affect the amount and nature of the homework assigned. Homework is considered here to include not only written work, but also related activities such as viewing specific television programs, news reporting, recreational reading, and other activities, which relate to classroom work.

The purposes of homework are to:

1. Develop regular and efficient study habits
2. Reinforce learning
3. Allow for individual differences

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) 

Grade 6 students must write Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) in May and June, in Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math.   

Progress Reports

There will be three reporting periods this year. Written reports will be issued in November, March and June. Final reports are sent home with students on the last day of school or mailed. For exact dates, please refer to the School Calendar.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Although parent-teacher interviews are tentatively scheduled in November and March, communication is encouraged whenever there are concerns regarding the welfare and progress of your child. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions or concerns. If there is good news to be shared, or problems occur, the teachers will contact you. 

Individual Program Plans (IPPs)

Although all students follow the curriculum as mandated by Alberta Learning as closely as possible, the school makes relevant changes for students with special needs in attempts to meet the wide variety of educational needs at Woking School. This is done by providing alternatives within, or to, the regular classes if it is considered in the best interests of the child. These changes could be using a different reading series if the child has difficulty coping with the prescribed text, or by modifying an existing program so it is more meaningful to the child.

To assist students experiencing difficulty in one or more areas of their educational program, a modified program will be developed. Classroom teachers will recommend students who are experiencing difficulties for testing. Parent/guardian approval is required before the testing can proceed. Program modifications may be implemented within the regular classroom or elsewhere in the school. The length of duration in special programs will vary with each student and depends on their specific needs.

Attendance Policy

Regular and punctual school attendance is expected and necessary for your child’s success in school. Under the School Act, every child is required to attend school each day it is in session unless he or she is unable to attend school because of illness or some other unavoidable cause. Any other absence must be arranged in advance with the principal. Please call the school or send a note when students are away. The school attempts to contact the home of each student who is absent on any day unless the parents have already notified the school of the absence. When students are absent, they miss new instruction, get behind in their work and may become frustrated -good attendance is essential to student success. If the number of absences reaches a serious point, a letter will be sent to the parents. This will be followed by a conference with the parents and student.

Discipline Policy

Woking School operates on the assumption that all students have the right to learn. We view successful learning as the shared responsibility of the school, the student and the home. The school provides the setting, the materials, and the opportunities to learn; the student is responsible for his/her own actions and responses to opportunities for learning: the home provides support to both the student and the school by fostering positive attitudes to self and learning. Our school-wide discipline plan is based on the set of expectations outlined by the School Act.

Province of Alberta School Act
Part 1, Section 7

A student shall conduct himself so as to reasonably comply with the following code of conduct:
a) be diligent in pursuing his/her studies;
b) attend school regularly and punctually;
c) co-operate fully with everyone authorized by the board to provide education programs and other services;
d) comply with the rules of the school;
e) account to his teachers for his conduct;
f) respect the rights of others

Our discipline policy reflects the belief that students can and will make good decisions. The staff has the responsibility to teach students how to make acceptable decisions, while placing the responsibility for a student’s behaviour where it belongs: in the hands of the student.

Student Rights and Responsibilities:

  • students have a right to be treated with respect and a responsibility to treat others with respect 
  • students have the right to be safe in school and a responsibility to ensure the physical, social and emotional safety of others 
  • students have the right to express their opinion in an appropriate manner and the responsibility to listen to the views of others 
  • students have the right to learn according to their ability and the responsibility to work to their full potential 
  • students have the right to have their property respected and the responsibility to respect the property of others 


As citizens of Woking School, we are to:

  • move in an orderly fashion throughout the building 
  • remove outdoor footwear upon entering and wear indoor footwear inside the school building 
  • show courtesy, consideration and respect towards others and their property 
  • keep hands, feet and objects to ourselves 
  • use all resources (books, supplies, equipment) wisely and appropriately 
  • arrive on time for class 
  • use school and playground equipment safely 
  • respect the rights of participants in organized games and not disrupt the activity 

Teachers are responsible for implementing a discipline policy in their classrooms. The policy outlined below will become an extension of classroom policies for students who continually disrupt the learning atmosphere of others.

Teachers, administration and support staffs are all responsible for the general discipline in the school. Staff will encourage student’s self discipline and positive behaviour using a variety of techniques and methods. If rules are defiantly broken, however, the offense can be one of two kinds:

A) Minor Offences
B) Major Offences

A) Minor offenses are defined in the 6-step process below and are dealt with immediately by the adult involved.

Consequences of Minor Offenses and Classroom Misbehaviors

Step 1: Teachers deal with any inappropriate student behaviors immediately and consistently.

Step 2: Teachers contact the parents / caregivers of the student, by phone or personally, if he/she continues to exhibit inappropriate behavior. Teachers will notify the principal, in writing, that Step 2 has occurred.

Step 3: Teachers will refer the student to the office to see the principal if the inappropriate behaviors continue. The principal will notify the parents that Step 3 has occurred. A discipline report will be sent home to parents and must be returned to the school with the parent’s signature.

Step 4: A meeting will be held with the student, parents, teacher(s) and the principal if the inappropriate behaviors continue after Step 3. The teacher will give a detailed account of the inappropriate behaviors and the principal will notify the parents that if the inappropriate behaviors persist, the student will be placed in time-out for an In-school suspension (ISS) and work outside of the regular classroom.

Step 5: If the inappropriate behavior persists, the principal will notify the parents and in consultation with the teacher(s) and the parents, the principal will serve the student with an ISS (In-school Suspension) for a determined length of time. The student will have all extra-curricular privileges, recesses and noon-hours suspended, until such time as he/she demonstrates they can work in the regular classroom. Students on suspension will be given alternate lunch and bathroom breaks.

Step 6: If the student continues to display inappropriate behavior, the principal will arrange a meeting with the parents and the student, upon which an Out-of-school suspension may result.

B) Major Offenses which are defined as those in which the student’s conduct interferes with, or threatens the orderly functioning of the school or well being of any student. These include physical and mental abuse, disobedience, defiance or open opposition to authority, abusive or profane language, willful destruction or defacing of school property, stealing or continuous disruptive behaviour.

Consequences of Major Offences

Step 1: For the first major offense the Principal will speak with the student to identify the inappropriate behavior and make clear to the student the formal disciplinary sequence that will be enacted if the behaviour reoccurs.
The student will serve thirty minutes of In School Suspension (ISS) and write an action plan.
Parents will be notified by phone-call and in writing that a major offence had occurred.

Step 2: The student repeats Step One and a Student Behavioral Contract is drawn up to assist the student in recognizing the need for change. Parents are advised by the principal of the offence and are requested to sign a copy of the Student Behavioral Contract and return it to the school.

Step 3: The student spends an extended period of time in ISS. Parents are required to contact the school and meet with the principal to discuss behavioural expectations for their child prior to the end of the ISS.

*Major offenses deemed serious enough may proceed directly to Step 3, regardless of previous offenses.

Step 4: Out of School Suspension is used only after an In-school Suspension has proven ineffective for a student, or if an offense is viewed serious enough to warrant summary suspension.

School Advisory Council

The Woking School Advisory Council is an organization of parents and school staff, including the principal, who meet regularly to discuss school matters and provide feedback to the school on items that parents feel should be addressed or considered. All parents and guardians who have children attending Woking School are automatically members of the Council and are encouraged to attend meetings. Watch your newsletter for reminders of meeting dates and agenda items.      


Woking School staff encourages parents and caregivers, who would like to volunteer at the school, to get involved. There is always room for an extra pair of hands in the classroom, library, office, on field trips or during special events. If you would like to volunteer a few hours a day, week or month during the year, please contact the school secretary or any of the teachers.

We would like to draw your attention to the Volunteer Code of Ethics that we request all parents to abide by while in a volunteer capacity:

A Volunteer’s Code of Ethics
Parent and community volunteers are always welcome at Woking School. We need your support if we are to offer the best educational programs possible. We need also to ensure that work done by volunteers be as positive as possible for the volunteer, the teacher, and above all, the student. Thus we would request that you read and agree to the following:


  1. A) Few parents enjoy hearing discussions regarding their child’s negative behavior or school difficulties. For this reason, it is imperative that you respect the confidentiality of the classroom. If you do note something that you feel the staff needs to be aware of, please discuss the matter with the classroom teacher involved.


  1. B) While all volunteers are greatly appreciated, we may not be able to make use of your contribution in the way you wish. Thus, the teacher will assign tasks to volunteers that are in the best educational interests of children.


  1. C) Practice tolerance and respect toward the students and teachers with whom you are in contact. Be sensitive to the teaching role.


  1. D) Notify the teacher in advance if you would like to volunteer in the classroom.


  1. E) Please understand the classroom is designed as a place of learning. Younger children are very distracting to a class and cannot be accommodated in the classroom.

You will be required to sign a Volunteer Form before volunteering at the school. Please check with the School Administration prior to your first session.

Extra-Curricular Sports

Woking School strives to offer a wide variety of sports to junior high and upper elementary students. The extra-curricular program starts in September and runs through to May. Participation on a school team is a privilege and not a right. Should students display poor behaviour in class, on the playground or field trips, they may not participate in any upcoming games, tournaments or other extra-curricular activities.


Grades 1-5 students participate in a co-curricular swim program at the EastLink Center pool in Grande Prairie. The program takes place every year for two weeks depending upon pool availability. Students are transported to Grande Prairie on a school bus accompanied by at least two supervisors.      

Illness/Injury Procedure

If a student becomes ill or is injured while at school, the following procedure as per Board Policy IHCD, will be followed:

In the event of illness: 

  1. A member of the staff will attempt to make contact with the parent/guardian or with the person listed for emergencies for the child to be picked up at the school and taken home. 
  2. If the parent or guardian cannot be reached, the student will be made as comfortable as possible within the school. If the illness appears serious, the school may call the Health Link Phone Line at 1 866 408 5465 and follow their advice. 
  3. Where a parent/guardian authorizes it, or in their absence, the principal deems it necessary, the principal may authorize transportation to a doctor or hospital and may direct two people to accompany the child. Attempts to contact the parent/guardian will continue. 

In the event of an injury:

  1. If a child is suspected of having a serious injury, he/she shall not be moved except where required by external dangers. Someone with first aid training or a medical practitioner will be called to the scene and the injured person will be made as comfortable as possible. Some instances where an injured person should not be moved until professional medical assistance arrives could include, but are not limited to: 
    • substantial flow of blood 
    • blow to the abdomen or head area, even though injury may not be readily apparent 
    • broken bones 
    • unconscious or fainting, and 
    • suspected spinal injury 
  1. An ambulance may be required in certain situations and the costs will be the responsibility of the parents. 

  2. Where the injury appears to warrant further medical attention, the parent/guardian will be phoned and their directions followed. Where a parent/guardian is unavailable, and the situation appears to warrant it, the principal shall take such action as he/she deems necessary. 

  3. Where a parent/guardian authorizes it, or in their absence, the principal deems it necessary, the principal may authorize transportation to a doctor or hospital and may direct two people to accompany the child. Attempts to contact the parent/guardian will continue. 

In all cases where medical treatment is administered to a child on or off the school premises, the parents/guardians will be informed as soon as possible. 


Parents are encouraged to dispense any necessary medication, prescription and non-prescription at home if at all possible. If under exceptional circumstances a student must receive medication during school hours the following procedures will be followed;

1. Non-prescription drugs will only be administered if parental approval is given in writing

2. Prescription Drugs

  1. i) parents must request in writing that the school administer the necessary medication
  2. ii) request must include written instructions signed by the parent and also the following information
  • student’s name
  • name of medication
  • purpose of medication
  • how often medication is to be administered
  • dosage
  • possible side effects
  • special storage instructions (refrigeration needed etc.)
  • when will student be finished taking this medication
  • is student able to take this medication on their own

iii) only the Principal or a person designated by her can administer medication

  1. iv) the Principal has the right to reject requests for administration of prescription medicines, such as injections that the staff may not be qualified to handle.

Head Lice Policy

In an effort to break the cycle of transmission of head lice (pediculosis), whenever a case of head lice is reported to, or identified by school personnel the following Woking School policy will be in effect and these guidelines followed.

  1. The principal may request that all persons in the school undergo a head check by trained staff volunteers or professionals to look for evidence of head lice.

  2. If a student is identified as having head lice and/or the eggs of head lice, parents will be contacted and required to immediately remove their child from the school.

  3. Readmission to school will be dependent upon assurance that

  4. The child has been treated to eradicate head lice and
  5. The child does not have any head lice and/or eggs of head lice on their person or clothing.

  6. Persons with head lice need to notify both the school and the Peace Country Health Unit.

Bus Procedures

As we live in a rural community, many of our students come to school on the bus. It is very important that they be quiet and orderly when riding the bus, so that the bus driver’s attention is not taken away from the road. Also according to Board Policy EEAF “All students riding on school buses during winter months shall be required to wear winter footwear and outerwear and to carry with them winter headgear and gloves or mitts from November 1 to March 31. In those cases where children are not properly attired for winter conditions, the bus driver shall advise the parent, principal and supervisor of transportation.”

If you are picking up your child or if your child is going on a different bus or needs to be dropped off at a different location the office MUST be informed by a note or phone call prior to 3:30 pm. Once this information is received in the office it will then be passed on to the classroom teachers and students as necessary. These procedures are vital in order to avoid confusion at bus time and also to ensure that buses are underway in a timely fashion.

Town students should not be arriving at school before 8:20 a.m. so as to avoid crossing the path of buses and will not be dismissed after school until all the buses have departed.

Students leaving the school during school hours

Students may not leave the schools grounds during school hours unless they have brought a note from their parents requesting that they leave or if the parents come and pick up their children at the school. Both the principal and the homeroom teacher must be notified that the student is leaving the premises. The principal or secretary must be notified if or when the student returns to school. These precautions are in place to avoid confusion at bus time.

Field Trips

Various out of the classroom experiences are or may be planned for the students throughout the year as a supplement to the school program. Parents will be notified in advance of all field trips requiring students to leave Woking. A completed permission slip is required before students attend. The consent form is your authorization for your child’s participation. Students not returning permission slips will be supervised in other classrooms. 

Field trips are dependent upon parental help for supervision. All field trips will be under the supervision of at least one teacher. Parents and volunteers are considered agents of the Board for liability purposes.


Teacher supervision is provided for the period of time preceding the morning classes (indoor supervision only at this time), as well as during recess periods.

Supervision is also provided by individual teachers for their students immediately following the afternoon dismissal. As well, the teacher supervision is provided for those students who are waiting for the school buses to arrive.

Please note that teacher and school legal responsibility terminates after a ten-minute time interval, upon dismissal.

Cold Weather Policy


  1. Pupils should be adequately dressed for outdoors. This includes coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, etc.


  1. Pupils should not arrive at school before 8:20 a.m. without prior arrangements.


  1. At the discretion of the supervising teacher, in the event of inclement weather, recess will be changed from outdoors to indoors. Many times these cold weather decisions will have to be based on “common sense” rather than on absolute temperature, ex. involvement of wind chill.

Schools in Peace Wapiti Public School Division are never closed due to cold weather. The only time a school is closed is due to a major mechanical breakdown such as a heating system failure in the winter, which cannot be quickly remedied, or a problem of similar severity, which would put students at risk. When buses do not run, attendance is usually poor due to the proportion of students that ride the bus. Therefore, no new material will be taught on those days. According to Board Policy EEAF “appropriate alternative education experiences" will be provided rather than the regular curriculum. These may include enrichment and remediation.

Parents must use their own discretion in sending their children to school in extremely cold conditions. Parents should notify the school if they are keeping their children at home due to cold weather.

Physical Education Policy

Students at Woking School have regular physical education classes. The emphasis at the elementary level is on participation and as the students move into higher grades, greater emphasis is placed on skill development in combination with sportsmanship and participation.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade Two do not have to change their clothes for Phys. Ed classes but must wear running shoes in order to participate. Students in Grades Three to Eight must change into gym strip for classes. Shorts and a T-shirt are preferred, but sweat pants may be permitted provided that they are not the same ones being worn to school as regular clothing on that day. Again, running shoes are a must.

Exemption from Physical Education

Evidence increasingly points to the value of physical activity in promoting overall achievement. To this end, we are attempting to develop a strong physical activity program with emphasis on participation and involvement. All students are encouraged to take part. Physical education is a mandatory part of the education program and as such only in very specific instances, such as physical injury of incapacitating health consideration, will students be excused from participation.

All requests for students to be excused from participation in Phys. Ed. or from some specific activity must come from the parents and be given to the appropriate teacher. Requests for lengthy exemption for medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor’s note.

Dress Code

The staff at Woking School recognize the need and importance for self-expression in regard to personal clothing, however, students must be cognizant of the rights of others, as well as the educational setting in which they learn. Therefore the following policy will be applied:

1) Clothing should be neat, tidy and appropriate to the educational setting. No midriff skin or beachwear allowed.

2) Students need suitable clothing and shoes for physical education.

3) Students must have two pairs of shoes, indoor and outdoor.

4) Students are to avoid wearing design or word motifs that are suggestive, indecent or contain profanity.

5) Appropriate underwear is to be worn, but not seen.

6) Parents and staff are reminded that they set an example for students and are encouraged to respect the dress code as well.

Students who neglect to follow the Dress Code will be given the opportunity to put on a sweatshirt or asked to go home and change. Students who repeatedly neglect the Dress Code will be dealt with according to the Woking School Discipline Policy.

Personal Property

School personnel cannot accept responsibility for the personal property of students. Please identify all outerwear, footwear and school supplies with your child’s full name.

School Pictures

Individual and class pictures are taken at the school each year. Parents will be informed of the date by newsletter. Students will also bring home the necessary form requesting pictures. Prepayment may be required dependent upon the policy of the studio.

Change of address, telephone number, emergency contacts, etc.

Many students have changes to their initial registration form during the year - address, telephone number, parental employment locations, phone number and so on. Demographic reports are sent home early in the school year to be updated, signed and returned. Any change or possible transfer to another location should be reported to the classroom teacher and/or the office, as soon as possible so that our records stay up to date.
